The inclusion of pronouns in Starfield stirs up mixed reactions in the gaming community, triggering a ban from Nexus Mods on a modification trying to remove these pronouns. The decision arouses both acclaim and disapprobation.
The well known modification website, Nexus Mods, stood resolute against a disputed modification which purported to eliminate pronoun choices from the space exploration game Starfield, developed by Bethesda. Nexus Mods continued to be unremorseful about its verdict, although it faced resistance from a section of the gaming community.
Contentious Issue of Character Creation in Starfield
The introduction of pronouns in Starfield's character creation process sparked controversy following the game's release. A heated vent by a streamer became widely circulated on Twitter where the streamer expressed irritation about the immersion-breaking nature of the pronoun choice: “I love nothing more than being dragged out at every conceivable opportunity so that you can current day us!”
Counterarguments Against the Critique
This eruption induced other prestigious streamers like Hasan to take part in the argument. Hasan accentuated the presence of more urgent issues with the game such as its confusing UI or the lackluster main quest, rather than the presence of pronouns.
In retaliation to the ongoing controversy, an individual modifier developed a feature that erased the pronoun selection from Starfield's character creation process. But, the modification did not entirely dispense with pronouns. It only discarded the “he/him” and “she/her” options, making the game default to “they/them” pronouns.
Nexus Mods' Defense on Disallowing the Mod
Asked about the resolution to erase the modification, Nexus Mods stated to 404 Media that, “Hosting this mod was not for us and it is certainly within our rights not to host content on our platform. It’s not a ‘political statement’ or an ‘alignment to one side or the other in the culture war’. We stand for diversity and inclusion in our community and the elimination of diversity, although appealing to many, does not encourage a positive modding community.”
Previous Stands Taken by Nexus Mods
This is not the first instance when Nexus Mods has taken such a stand. They have earlier removed a mod that eliminated the Pride flag from Spider-Man Remastered. Their actions, while hailed by many, have also encountered criticism.
