The game play of Diablo 4 has an obvious void noticeable by seasoned players of the game series. This space was typically occupied by the character of a Holy Warrior originating from one of Sanctuary's several temples.
Since the introduction of Diablo 2, the Holy Warrior character has been a significant part of each game's roster. This character was typically portrayed by the Paladin or Crusader class, depending on the game's iteration. The Paladin took a complementary role to the Crusader in Diablo 3 as well as in Diablo Immortal, ensuring the Holy Warrior slot remained filled until the unveiling of Diablo 4.
It seems that Diablo 4, for the first time, has discarded the Holy Warrior class. Fans of the Paladin, Crusader, or even the Templar class are particularly observing this omission. However, do note that this action does not stem from negligence or overlooking since this distinct pattern is prevalent in other character types as well.
For instance, Diablo 4 also lacks a martial artist archetype, ordinarily represented by the Assassin or Monk. Despite the anticipation of more character classes joining the game as part of the Vessel of Hatred expansion in 2024, this absence is undoubtedly conspicuous.
The Absence of Holy Warrior Class
The other usual character types have appeared in Diablo 4, such as the Rogue, Barbarian, and Sorcerer. The new game version even integrates two unique summoner classes, the Necromancer and Druid, giving players diverse playstyles.
The absence of the Holy Warrior class has incited dissatisfaction amongst the gaming community. This feeling of discontent is evident in the various complaints and lamentations posted on online forums and gaming discussion platforms.
For many seasoned Diablo players, the Holy Warrior has been a constant throughout the series. Being confronted with the absence of this revered character has been a jarring experience. The sentiment shared amongst disappointed gamers place emphasis on their preference for playing as some sort of Holy Warrior type in Diablo games, and how the lack of one in Diablo 4 has left the character selection feeling inadequate.
Frustrated users have been articulating their disappointment on the forums, posting quotes like: "Now that some time has passed and people have been able to let it sink in, is anyone else disappointed about the absence of a Holy Warrior class? I know that everyone has their preference and Holy Warriors aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but to me, it just feels a bit odd."
The Future of The Holy Warrior Class
Blizzard Entertainment, the developer of the Diablo series, responded to fans stating that the next character class to be added would be a completely fresh concept, unseen before. Therefore, fans anticipating a return of the Paladin or Crusader may have to wait until the Vessel of Hatred expansion in 2024.
However, it should be noted that the Vessel of Hatred won't be the end of new additions to the game. With annual expansions planned for the foreseeable future, there are chances of a Holy Warrior making a return to the game. The popularity of the Crusader class leads many to predict that a Holy Warrior may indeed return to bring divine justice to Hell's forces.
Until then, players are eagerly awaiting the reveal of the next character class, hoping that it might prove to be a worthy replacement for the much-loved Holy Warrior class.
